How to Fix Common Wi-Fi Connection Problems

When Wi-Fi Stops Working, Start Here

Few things are more frustrating than Wi-Fi that drops out in the middle of a video call, refuses to connect after waking from sleep, or delivers speeds that feel more like dial-up than broadband. The good news is that the vast majority of wireless connection problems fall into a handful of predictable categories with well-established fixes. Before you call your ISP or buy a new router, work through these solutions in order — most people find their answer within the first three.

Power Cycle Your Router and Modem

It’s a cliché because it works. Unplug your modem, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in, wait for all lights to stabilize (usually about two minutes), then do the same with your router. This clears the device’s memory, resets its connection to your ISP, and often resolves intermittent drops, slow speeds, and devices that refuse to connect. If you have a combined modem/router unit (gateway), one power cycle handles both. Do this before trying anything else — it resolves the issue more than half the time.

Check Whether the Problem Is Your Wi-Fi or Your Internet

This distinction matters and saves troubleshooting time. Connect a device directly to your router via Ethernet cable and test your internet speed at speedtest.net. If the wired connection is fast and stable, the problem is your Wi-Fi — signal strength, interference, or router configuration. If the wired connection is also slow or dropping, the problem is upstream — your modem, your ISP, or the line coming into your house. Call your ISP for the second scenario; focus on your wireless setup for the first.

Reduce Wireless Interference

The 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band is crowded. Neighboring routers, Bluetooth devices, microwave ovens, baby monitors, cordless phones, and even USB 3.0 devices can all generate interference on this frequency. Log into your router’s admin interface and switch to a less congested channel — use a free tool like Wi-Fi Analyzer (Android) or NetSpot (Windows/Mac) to see which channels in your area have the least traffic. Channels 1, 6, and 11 are the only non-overlapping channels on 2.4 GHz, so stick to those. Update Your Router’s Firmware

Router manufacturers regularly release firmware updates that fix bugs, patch security vulnerabilities, and improve wireless performance. Most routers don’t update automatically — you need to log into the admin panel (usually at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) and check for updates manually. The process takes five minutes and sometimes resolves persistent connection issues that no amount of rebooting fixes. While you’re in the admin panel, make sure your security is set to WPA3 or WPA2 — older protocols like WEP are both insecure and can cause compatibility problems with modern devices.

Forget and Reconnect to the Network

Saved network profiles can become corrupted, especially after password changes, router resets, or OS updates. On the device that’s having trouble, go to Wi-Fi settings, select your network, choose “Forget” or “Remove,” then reconnect by entering the password fresh. On Windows, you can also reset the entire network stack by opening Command Prompt as administrator and running: netsh winsock reset followed by netsh int ip reset, then restarting the computer. This clears out any accumulated configuration errors in the networking stack.

Update Your Device’s Wi-Fi Drivers

Outdated or corrupted wireless adapter drivers cause more connection problems than most people realize. On Windows, open Device Manager, expand “Network adapters,” right-click your wireless adapter, and select “Update driver.” For better results, visit your laptop manufacturer’s support page and download the latest driver directly rather than relying on Windows’ automatic search. On particularly stubborn issues, uninstall the driver completely, restart, and let Windows reinstall it from scratch. This resolves many cases of intermittent disconnections and failed connections after Windows updates.

When to Replace Your Router

If your router is more than four or five years old, persistent Wi-Fi problems might be a sign that the hardware has simply aged out. Older Wi-Fi 4 and early Wi-Fi 5 routers lack the technology to efficiently handle the device loads and bandwidth demands of a modern household.
